BACKGROUND: Collagen is a component of Pyogenic Granuloma (PG) and Peripheral Ossifying Fibroma (POF) and performs different functions in these lesions. The objective of this study is to evaluate the role of collagen and immunostaining for Transforming Growth Factor beta (TGF-ß) in the clinical and microscopic findings of PG and POF. MATERIAL AND METHODS: PG (n=20) and POF (n=20) were selected for clinical evaluation (sex, age, localization, size and evolution time) and microscopic analysis (picrosirius red staining for collagen analysis and immunohistochemistry for TGF-ß) performed in the superficial and deep areas of the two lesions. ANOVA/Bonferroni and t-test, Pearson correlation and χ2 were used to compare the sites and parameters analyzed (p<0.05, GraphPad Prism 5.0). RESULTS: The depth of PG presented the highest amount of collagen (p<0.001), and its surface showed the lowest amount of type 1 collagen (yellow-red strong birefringence). Type 1 collagen gradually increased in depth of PG, surface and depth of POF (p<0.001). The number of TGF-ß+ cells was lower on the surface of PG compared with the depth of PG and the two areas of POF (p<0.001). Sex and localization did not affect these parameters, but the profile of collagen and immunostaining for TGF-ß suffered from modifications by the time of evolution and the size of the lesion. CONCLUSIONS: Although PG and POF are reactive gingival lesions, the expression of TGF-ß and its role in collagen showed different biological behaviors in these lesions, suggesting different biological origins for its components.

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) has been used increasingly in oral and maxillofacial surgery in recent years. The aim of this experimental study was to perform a mechanical evaluation of PRF from patients on warfarin. PRF samples were obtained from 21 patients on warfarin (mean INR 2.30 ± 0.89) and 21 non-anticoagulated patients (control; mean INR 1.08 ± 0.07). For the patients on warfarin, two experimental groups were formed based on the PRF centrifugation time: group A, 10 min (21 samples); group B, 18 min (20 samples). Control group samples (21 samples) were centrifuged for 10 min. Mechanical properties were evaluated by axial tensile test and suture retention test with an Instron 3345 universal testing machine. Mechanical parameters were compared between the groups using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn's post-hoc test. Axial tensile values were similar in all groups. In the suture retention test, significantly lower values of deformation at maximum force were observed in the experimental group: group A (107.07 ± 25.05%) and group B (104.81 ± 16.79%) versus control (118.01 ± 17.61%) (P = 0.033). Moreover, maximum force was significantly lower in group A (0.17 ± 0.05 N) than in the control group (0.20 ± 0.06 N), while it was significantly higher in group B (0.22 ± 0.07 N) than in group A (P = 0.026). In conclusion, for patients on warfarin, the centrifugation time should be increased to 18 min in order to obtain PRF with superior performance.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to analyze whether immunohistochemistry (IHC) is more sensitive than hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining for identifying perineural invasion (PNI) or lymphovascular invasion (LVI) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis (Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews - CRD 42021256515), data were obtained from six databases (PubMed, Scopus, LILACS, Web of Science, EBSCO, LIVIVO, Embase) and the grey literature. Cross-sectional observational studies of the diagnostic sensitivity of IHC for PNI and LVI were included. Studies were selected in two phases: first collection and reference retrieval. The Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 tool assessed study quality, while the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach assessed evidence quality. The meta-analysis (random effects model) was performed using MedCalc 18.2.1 software (MedCalc®) (p<0.05). RESULTS: Four studies (560 patients with 295 biopsies) were analyzed. The combined sensitivity was 76% (95% confidence interval [CI], 44.30-97.19%) and specificity was 42% (95% CI, 23.40-62.02%). The positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) were 61% (95% CI, 49.78-71.53%) and 70% (95% CI, 37.63-94.43%). The overall accuracy was 58% (95% CI, 45.17-70.65%). The risk of bias was low, and GRADE analysis showed a very low certainty of evidence. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that IHC staining to highlight PNI/LVI may be useful in cases in which H&E analysis results in a negative decrease in the prevalence of false-negative cases and underestimated treatment.

BACKGROUND: An increase in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cases was observed despite the reduction in exposure to classic risk factors. Although the exact cause of this trend remains unknown, epigenetic factors could be contributing to an increased occurrence of these tumors. This study aims to assess the influence of PMS2 protein immunoexpression on the prognosis of patients with OSCC. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study comprised 76 cases of OSCC treated between 2011 and 2016. Immunohistochemical staining for PMS2 was performed. For evaluation, 10 fields per histological section were photographed at a 400x magnification and positively-stained cells were counted with Image J. Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare the immunolabeling pattern with the clinical-pathological and prognostic characteristics. Survival analysis was performed with Chi-square, Long-Rank Mantel-Cox and Cox regression tests (p<0.05). RESULTS: An overexpression of PMS2 was observed in N0/1 tumors and in oral cancers found in unusual locations. In patients ≤60 years of age, high levels of PMS2 (>60%; p=0.041) were associated with low survival (p=0.029). In multivariate analysis, surgery combined with chemotherapy (p=0.030) and high PMS2 immunoexpression (p=0.042) significantly increased the risk of death for ≤60 years old patients. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study indicate that PMS2 can be a potential prognostic protein marker in OSCC patients 60 years of age and younger.

As the outermost layer of the tooth crown, dental enamel is the most mineralized tissue in mammals, consisting of hydroxyapatite crystallites separated by long and narrow nanochannels. A major challenge in dentistry is how various molecules can be infiltrated into these nanopores in an efficient and controlled way. Here we show a robust method to transport various ions of interest, such as fluoride (F-), potassium (K+), calcium (Ca++), and sodium (Na+), into these nanopores by electrokinetic flows. It is verified by fluorescence microscopy, laser-scanning confocal microscopy, mass spectrometry, and ion selective electrode technique. Different ions are demonstrated to infiltrate through the entire depth of the enamel layer (~1 mm), which is significantly enhanced penetration compared with diffusion-based infiltration. Meanwhile, transport depth and speed can be controlled by infiltration time and applied voltage. This is the first demonstration of reliably delivering both anions and cations into the enamel nanopores. This technique opens opportunities in caries prevention, remineralization, tooth whitening, and nanomedicine delivery in clinical dentistry, as well as other delivery challenges into various biomaterials such as bones.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a chronic disease that due to an intense inflammatory response triggers systemic changes such as hepatic alterations. This study aimed to compare hepatic damage in rats that received experimental periodontitis at one or two periodontal sites with ligatures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighteen rats were separated into three groups: control, without ligature; periodontitis 1, with one ligature; and periodontitis 2, with two ligatures. The following parameters were assessed: gingival bleeding index, probing pocket depth, tooth mobility, alveolar bone loss, malondialdehyde (MDA) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity in periodontal tissue; histopathological evaluation of hepatic tissue (steatosis score); glutathione levels (GSH), MDA, MPO, cholesterol and triglycerides in the liver; and serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). RESULTS: Periodontal evaluation data showed that the periodontitis model worked well. The groups with periodontitis did not differ significantly in relation to MPO activity and MDA levels in the gingival samples, but they were significantly different when compared with the control group. Steatosis was observed in the histological analysis of the groups with periodontitis, but between the periodontitis groups, two ligatures did not cause increase in steatosis score. The levels of GSH, MDA, total cholesterol and triglycerides in the hepatic tissue were not altered between groups with periodontitis, but they showed significant differences in comparison with the control group. The activity of MPO in hepatic tissue and serum levels of AST and ALT did not present significant difference among the three groups. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, our results demonstrated that one or two ligatures inducing periodontitis were both sufficient to cause fatty liver. Steatosis caused by two ligatures did not present larger extension and severity than steatosis caused by one ligature.

Cyclodextrins and cyclodextrins-modified molecules have interesting and appealing properties due to their capacity to host components that are normally insoluble or poorly soluble in water. In this work, we investigate the interaction of a ß-cyclodextrin polymer (poly-ß-CD) with λ-DNA. The polymers are obtained by the reaction of ß-CD with epichlorohydrin in alkaline conditions. We have used optical tweezers to characterize the changes of the mechanical properties of DNA molecules by increasing the concentration of poly-ß-CD in the sample. The physical chemistry of the interaction is then deduced from these measurements by using a recently developed quenched-disorder statistical model. It is shown that the contour length of the DNA does not change in the whole range of poly-ß-CD concentration (<300µM). On the other hand, significant alterations were observed in the persistence length that identifies two binding modes corresponding to the clustering of ∼2.6 and ∼14 polymer molecules along the DNA double helix, depending on the polymer concentration. Comparing these results with the ones obtained for monomeric ß-CD, it was observed that the concentration of CD that alters the DNA persistence length is considerably smaller when in the polymeric form. Also, the binding constant of the polymer-DNA interaction is three orders of magnitude higher than the one found for native (monomeric) ß-CD. These results show that the polymerization of the ß-CD strongly increases its binding affinity to the DNA molecule. This property can be wisely used to modulate the binding of cyclodextrins to the DNA double helix.

This study investigated the antinociceptive effects of (S)-(-)-perillyl alcohol (PA) on orofacial nociception in Swiss male mice using formalin-, capsaicin-, and glutamate-induced pain tests. For each test, eight animals per group were pre-treated intraperitoneally by a blinded investigator with PA (50 or 75mg/kg), morphine, or vehicle (saline+0.2% Tween 80). The treatment was performed before the induction of orofacial nociception by injecting formalin, capsaicin, or glutamate solution into the right area of the upper lip. The orofacial nociceptive behaviour was timed in all tests by an investigator who was blinded to the treatments. The statistical analysis was performed using confidence intervals (CI), the effect size, and power. PA blocked the orofacial nociceptive behaviour at both doses tested (P<0.05) similarly to morphine (P>0.05), in all tests. The effect size was high in the phase 1 formalin test for 50mg/kg PA (95% CI 0.48-2.31, power 84.6%) and 75mg/kg PA (95% CI 0.82-2.76, power 96.2%), in phase 2 for 75mg/kg PA (95% CI 0.44-2.26, power 82.3%), and in the glutamate test for 75mg/kg PA (95% CI 1.11-3.16, power 99.2%). These findings show strong evidence for the antinociceptive properties of PA in the orofacial region.

AIM: To characterize the pulp immune cell profile in the teeth of rats treated with zoledronic acid (ZA). METHODOLOGY: Male Wistar rats (n = 6 per group) received four intravenous infusions of ZA at doses of 0.04, 0.20 or 1.00 mg kg-1 ZA or saline (control). On the 70th experimental day, they were euthanized. The first right molar was examined microscopically and submitted to toluidine blue reaction and immunohistochemical for CD68, tumour necrosis Factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1ß, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB) and IL-18 binding protein (IL-18 bp). The presence of ectasic/dilated vessels and inflammatory cells was analysed, and mast cells and mononuclear CD68-positive cells were counted along with the intensity of immunostaining (0-3) for inflammatory markers in odontoblasts and nonodontoblasts pulp cells. The Kruskal-Wallis/Dunn's test (scores or quantitative data) and the chi-squared test (categorical data) were used (GraphPad Prism 5.0, P < 0.05). RESULTS: There was no differences in the number of animals exhibiting dilated/ectasic blood vessels (P = 0.242) and inflammatory cells (P = 0.489) or in the number of mast cells (P = 1.000). However, there was an increase in mononuclear CD68-positive cells (P = 0.026), immunostaining of TNF-α (P = 0.020), IL-1ß (P = 0.027) and iNOS (P = 0.001) in odontoblasts, and IL-1ß (P = 0.013) in nonodontoblast pulp cells dose-dependently. NFkB (nucleus and cytoplasm) and IL-18 bp did not differ between groups. CONCLUSION: ZA modified the immune cell profile in the dental pulp, increasing the number of macrophages and expression of pro-inflammatory markers independent of NFkB.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the expression of p-AKT, p-JNK, FoxO3a, and Ki-67 in samples of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and oral epithelial dysplasias (OEDs) to understand their possible involvement in the malignant transformation process of oral lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Tissue samples of 20 cases of OSCCs, 20 OEDs, and normal oral mucosa were subjected to immunohistochemistry reactions for anti-p-AKT, anti-p-JNK, anti-FoxO3a, and anti-Ki-67 antibodies. It was analyzed using quantitative (number of immunostained cells) and qualitative (immunostaining intensity) parameters in different cell immunostaining sublocations. RESULTS: Nuclear p-AKT was observed significantly greater immunostaining in OSCC (21.2 ± 19.0) than in dysplasias (7.9 ± 8.1) and controls (1.8 ± 4.7) (P = 0.002). Immunostaining of strong nuclear p-JNK was greater in controls (48.3 ± 13.7) than in OEDs (11.0 ± 10.3) and OSCCs (1.1 ± 1.3) (P < 0.001). Strong nuclear immunostaining of FoxO3a proved to be absent in OSCCs (0.0 ± 0.1) with little staining on dysplasias (3.2 ± 5.4) and increased expression in controls (13.5 ± 4.8) (P < 0.001). Immunostaining of strong nuclear Ki-67 was grater in OSCCs (48.1 ± 49.6) than in OED (11.8 ± 10.6) and controls (1.9 ± 2.0) (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Malignant process of OEDs in this research may involve the same mechanisms of established malignant lesions.

OBJECTIVES: Characterize the cell profile and immunostaining of proinflammatory markers in an experimental model of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male Wistar rats (n = 6-7) were treated chronically with saline solution or zoledronic acid (ZA) at 0.04, 0.20, and 1.00 mg kg(-1) (1.4 × 10(-7) , 6.9 × 10(-6) , and 3.4 × 10(-5)  mol kg(-1) ), and subsequently, the first left inferior molar was extracted. Were performed counting of viable and empty osteocyte lacunae, viable and apoptotic osteoclasts, polymorphonuclear neutrophil, mast cells (toluidine blue), and the positive presence cells for CD68, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), IL (interleukin)-1ß, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB) and IL-18 binding protein (IL-18 bp). RESULTS: BRONJ was showed in ZA treated with 0.20 and 1.00 mg kg(-1) . There is a dose dependent increase in percentage of empty osteocyte lacunae (P < 0.001) and apoptotic osteoclasts (P < 0.001), counting of total osteoclasts (P = 0.003), polymorphonuclear neutrophil cells (P = 0.009), cytoplasmic-positive cells of CD68 (P < 0.001), TNF-α (P = 0.001), IL-1ß (P = 0.001), iNOS (P < 0.001), NF-kB (P = 0.006), and nuclear-positive cells of NF-kB (P = 0.011). Consequently, there is no difference in mast cells (P = 0.957), and IL-18 bp immunostaining decreases dose dependently (P = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: BRONJ is characterized by increases in immunostaining for proinflammatory markers and NF-kB and inversely associated with cells exhibiting IL-18 bp.

BACKGROUND: Denosumab, an anti-resorptive agent, IgG2 monoclonal antibody for human Receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand (RANKL), has been related to the occurrence of osteonecrosis of the jaws. Thus, the aim of this study was to review the literature from clinical case reports, regarding the type of patient and the therapeutic approach used for osteonecrosis of the jaws induced by chronic use of Denosumab. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For this, a literature review was performed on PubMed, Medline and Cochrane databases, using the keywords "Denosumab" "anti-RANK ligand" and "Osteonecrosis of jaw". To be included, articles should be a report or a serie of clinical cases, describing patients aged 18 years or over who used denosumab therapy and have received any therapy for ONJ. RESULTS: Thirteen complete articles were selected for this review, totaling 17 clinical cases. The majority of ONJ cases, patients receiving Denosumab as treatment for osteoporosis and prostate cancer therapy. In most cases, patients affected by ONJ were women aged 60 or over and posterior mandible area was the main site of involvement. Diabetes pre-treatment with bisphosphonates and exodontia were the most often risk factors related to the occurrence of this condition. Systemic and local antibiotic therapy with or without surgical debridement was the most used treatment for ONJ resolution. CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that the highest number of ONJ cases caused by the use of anti-RANKL agents occurred in female patients, aged 60 years or older, under treatment for osteoporosis and cancer metastasis, and the most affected region was the mandible posterior.

The ability to infiltrate various molecules and resins into dental enamel is highly desirable in dentistry, yet transporting materials into dental enamel is limited by the nanometric scale of their pores. Materials that cannot be infiltrated into enamel by diffusion/capillarity are often considered molecules with sizes above a critical threshold, which are often considered to be larger than the pores of enamel. We challenge this notion by reporting the use of electrokinetic flow to transport solutions with molecules with sizes above a critical threshold-namely, an aqueous solution with a high refractive index (Thoulet's solution) and a curable fluid resin infiltrant (without acid etching)-deep into the normal enamel layer. Volume infiltration by Thoulet's solution is increased by 5- to 6-fold, and resin infiltration depths as large as 600 to 2,000 µm were achieved, in contrast to ~10 µm resulting from diffusion/capillarity. Incubation with demineralization solution for 192 h resulted in significant demineralization at noninfiltrated histologic points but not at resin infiltrated. These results open new avenues for the transport of materials in dental enamel.

The Celtis iguanaea (Jacq.) Sargent (Cannabaceae) is one of the native species of the Cerrado region of Brazil widely used in folk medicine to treat dyspepsia. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the gastroprotective effect of the Celtis iguanaea (Jacq.) Sargent (HE) hexane leaf extract in the lesion and gastric secretion models.Antiulcerogenic activity of the Celtis iguanaea (HE) hexane leaf extract was observed with the experimental models, such as indomethacin and pyloric ligation-induced gastric ulcers. In order to evaluate the antisecretory activity of this extract, isolated Rana catesbeiana mucosa and pyloric ligation in mice were used. The HE treatment reduced the lesion index of indomethacin and pyloric ligation-induced ulcer. This extract also reduced the gastric acid secretion and total acidity (increasing the gastric pH) in mice. The secretion of H+ was reduced in the basal values (15.58 ± 1.99 µEq H+/g/15 min) when isolated Rana catesbeiana mucosa was incubated with HE. Intraduodenal administration of HE reduced the gastric secretion produced by bethanecol or histamine. The antiulcerogenic and antisecretory efficacy of HE in this study suggest anticholinergic and antihistaminergic mechanism or interruption of intracellular events that are linked to acid secretion.


Celtis iguanaea (Jacq.) Sargent (Cannabaceae) é uma das espécies nativas do cerrado brasileiro, sendo amplamente utilizada na medicina popular para o tratamento de dispepsia. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar o efeito gastroprotetor do extrato hexânico das folhas de Celtis iguanaea (Jacq.) Sargent (EH) em modelos de secreção e de lesões gástricas. A atividade antisecretória do extrato hexânico das folhas de Celtis iguanaea (EH) foi avaliada no modelo de mucosa isolada de Rana catesbeiana e pelo modelo de ligadura pilórica em camundongos. A avaliação da atividade anti-ulcerogênica do EH foi determinada no modelo de úlceras gástricas induzidas por indometacina e ligadura pilórica. Quando a mucosa de Rana catesbeiana isolada foi incubada com o EH, a secreção de H+ foi reduzida em comparação com o valor basal (15,58 ± 1,99 µEq H+/g/15 min). O tratamento com o EH reduziu o índice de lesões na úlcera induzida por indometacina e ligadura pilórica. O EH também reduziu o volume de secreção, a acidez total, e aumentou o pH gástrico. A administração intraduodenal reduziu a secreção gástrica produzida por betanecol ou histamina. A eficácia anti-ulcerogênica e antisecretória do EH neste estudo, sugere um mecanismo anticolinérgico e antihistaminérgico ou interrupção de eventos intracelulares que estão ligados à secreção ácida.

This in vitro study aimed to quantify water loss at histological points in ground sections of normal enamel during air drying at room temperature (25°C) and relative humidity of 50%. From each of 10 ground sections of erupted permanent human normal enamel, three histological points (n = 30) located at 100, 300 and 500 µm from enamel surface and along a transversal following prisms paths were characterized regarding the mineral, organic and water volumes. Water loss during air drying was from 0 to 48 h. Drying occurred with both falling and constant-drying rates, and drying stabilization times (Teq ) ranged from 0.5 to 11 h with a mean 0.26 (±0.12)% weight loss. In some samples (n = 5; 15 points), Teq increased as a function of the distance from the enamel surface, and drying occurred at an apparent diffusion rate of 3.47 × 10⁻8 cm² s⁻¹. Our data provide evidence of air drying resulting in air replacing enamel's loosely bound water in prisms sheaths following a unidirectional water diffusion rate of 3.47 × 10⁻8 cm² s⁻¹ (from the original enamel surface inward), not necessarily resulting in water evaporating directly into air, with important implications for transport processes and optical and mechanical properties.

Lesion area measurement of enamel caries using polarized light microscopy (PLM) is currently performed in a large number of studies, but measurements are based mainly on a mislead qualitative interpretation of enamel birefringence in a single immersion medium. Here, five natural enamel caries lesions are analysed by microradiography and in PLM, and the differences in their histopathological features derived from a qualitative versus a quantitative interpretation of enamel birefringence are described. Enamel birefringence in different immersion media (air, water and quinoline) is interpreted by both qualitative and quantitative approaches, the former leading to an underestimation of the depth of enamel caries mainly when the criterion of validating sound enamel as a negatively birefringent area in immersion in water is used (a current common practice in dental research). Procedures to avoid the shortcomings of a qualitative interpretation of enamel birefringence are presented and discussed.

AIM: Our aim was to test the hypothesis that co-exposure to lead and fluoride alter the severity of enamel fluorosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Wistar rats were allocated in four groups: control, and 3 groups that received water containing 100 ppm of fluoride (F), 30 ppm of lead (Pb), or 100 ppm of F and 30 ppm of Pb (F+Pb) from the beginning of gestation. Enamel analysis and F and Pb determinations in enamel, dentine, and bone were performed in 81-day-old animals. Fluorosis was quantified using a new fluorosis index based on the identification of incisor enamel defects (white bands and white islets, representing hypomineralization, and cavities) weighted according to their severity and quantity. Hypomineralization was validated histopathologically by polarizing microscopy and microradiography. Scores were given by two blinded calibrated examiners (intra and interexaminer kappa values were 0.8 and 0.86, respectively). RESULTS: The control and the Pb groups presented normal enamel. The F+Pb group presented more severe enamel defects compared with the F group (P<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that lead exacerbates dental fluorosis in rodents, suggesting that co-exposure to lead may affect the degree of fluorosis.

The main problem in interpreting birefringence of dental enamel under polarizing microscopy is the lack of physical constants able to allow the Wiener equation to be applied directly to the composition of such tissue. The present study introduces a new approach to circumvent this constraint. Because the nonmineral phase of enamel is heterogeneous, its refractive index can be computed in terms of its components (namely, water, which is partially replaced by the immersion medium, and organic matter), thereby providing a more acceptable refractive index to be used in the Wiener equation. Furthermore, the enamel mineral volume is ordinarily calculated on the basis of the density 3.15 g cm(-3). The density 2.99 g cm(-3) has been, however, reported to be more accurate for enamel hydroxyapatite, so enamel mineral volumes from selected published data were converted using such a density. The birefringence of mature enamel computed by the Wiener equation, taking into account the above refinements, matched, for the first time, published experimental birefringence values. The theoretical water and organic contents were also consistent with published experimental data. Thus, a direct application of the Wiener equation to the enamel composition has now been achieved. It is speculated that quantitative data on the mineral, the water and the organic contents of mature dental enamel can be derived from interpretation of birefringence in two immersion media (obtained before and after extraction of the organic matter) with this new approach.
